Together with Lars Thierling from Paddeln macht Spass, our expert for camping and watersports, you will learn here what to look out for when planning your holiday on the water.
There’s hardly any other type of holiday that offers as much freedom and flexibility as camping and caravanning. In recent years, more and more caravanners have acquired a parallel taste not only for nature but also magical moments in and around the water. Whether by the river, the lake or the sea: with the right gear, we guarantee you will rediscover caravanning for yourself.
Where to go?
A particular advantage for caravanning enthusiasts is the ability to travel independently without fixed routines. Whether in a simple tent, a self-built van, a motorhome or a caravan, mobile sleeping accommodations have one advantage: they allow you to plan flexibly, discover a lot and ignite new watersports passions.
From canoeing and kayaking on the lake or a relaxed SUP tour with the family along an enchanting canal to surfing in the North Sea: in Germany, Holland and the surrounding region you’ll find plenty of campgrounds and sites that are near water and offer watersports for their guests. For those who want to spend their holidays away from campgrounds and experience watersports Lars Thierling advises: Plan responsibly because watersports are not possible in every area. He says, “It's best to find out beforehand on the internet or at the tourist information office where you can camp and where watersports are allowed.” At boot Düsseldorf you can discover many campsites and pitches right on the water and book your next holiday immediately!
For maximum flexibility and freedom of choice on your camping or caravanning holiday by the water, it makes sense to buy your own equipment before you go. But regardless of whether it’s surfing, wakeboarding, SUP or paddling you want: you’ll need space for the equipment. So how and where are boards and kayaks best stowed?
Apart from the innovative folding solutions for kayaks from Oru-Kajak or the inflatable boards, e.g. from Starboard for SUP, not every board and boat can be simply compressed to a minimum pack size and stowed away. Special carrier systems for the car roof or tailgate enable suitable and safe transport in such cases. Whether with a motorhome, caravan or van, practical carrier systems from thule.com or sawiko.com often conjure up additional storage space for watersports equipment in a wink and make travelling with boards and boats easy and convenient. You can find out all about these and other solutions at the upcoming CARAVAN SALON.
If you not only want to do sports on the water, but also want to go further with your own boat, there’s no way around a towing solution with a boat trailer. The prerequisites for this are a trailer coupling on the towing vehicle and sufficient knowledge about driving with a trailer.
Travel expert Lars Thierling explains: “The basic requirement is the correct driving licence class. With a regular car driving licence, you can usually drive vehicles with up to 3.5 tons, including a trailer of maximum 750 kg. For anything over that, a different driving licence class is required.” If you’re not sure, the ADAC can help.
Be open to new things
Paddling fun not only requires physical fitness, but also invites you to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Once in the canoe, kayak or on the board, you don’t want to miss the relaxed atmosphere. And let’s be honest: isn't that exactly what we love and appreciate most about camping and caravanning? The connection with nature, flexible leisure activities, and the unique views! Camping and watersports is a 'perfect match' and you shouldn’t miss the chance to have this experience on your next caravanning holiday!
