Fellow sailor Tim, winner of our community raffle, reports
The MEU is back in Travemünde – young skipper Clara Weimer has successfully completed the “MEU goes Caribbean” project. Tim, one of our social media followers, sailed with her on the last leg of the journey, a prize he won in a competition. He shares his experiences on board the MEU with us here.
You sailed the last leg on the MEU - how was this experience for you?
It was a very enjoyable but also exciting experience. I don’t have much sailing knowledge, so I was able to learn a lot from Clara. A particular highlight was our arrival in Travemünde, where we were welcomed by many boats and accompanied on the last few metres.
Are you also a private sailor?
I'd only sailed once, in Croatia, otherwise I mainly prefer motorboats. But since I want to get my SKS (sport coaster licence) in the near future and do more sailing, this experience was good for me.
What did you particularly like on the water?
Mainly the peace and quiet. And while sailing I really liked the combination of relaxation and doing tasks (setting sails etc.).
What was daily life on board like?
In the mornings, we took turns making breakfast (baked bread rolls, pancakes or French toast) and then we ate breakfast together. Then we either got ready for sailing or enjoyed a harbour day doing stuff on land. In the evenings, one of us prepared dinner for everyone. We laughed a lot and had fun.
Were there any obstacles that you had to overcome as a crew?
The petrol station on Fehmarn wasn’t in service that day, so we had to walk 30 minutes to the next harbour with a handcart to get fuel for the heater. Apart from that, we didn't have any major obstacles. Even when the weather was bad, we thought of things we could do together (such as wakeboarding at the wake park on Fehmarn).
Great that you were there, Tim!
