With the arrival of spring the watersports season is officially open - the water is calling us! It's high time to enjoy nature to the fullest on a marvellous canoe or kayak tour and just unwind. But how do you get a practical introduction to paddle sports?
Leon Bast is a professional extreme kayaker, has been travelling the world by canoe for years and represents the German national team in the freestyle discipline. In our interview, he reveals his tips and tricks.
How did it all start for you back then?
One day, my father and I noticed a newspaper article about a river clean-up in our neighbourhood. Then as we were paddling a river for the first time in a rubber dinghy, we decided to take a course organized by the local kayak club. One training session turned into many and by now I've been travelling on the water for 13 years.
From what age can you learn to paddle?
You can go kayaking at any age. I know lots of people who had their first kayak experience at the age of 2 or 3. It's never too late to start and that's the beauty of this sport. Kayaking has many facets, so it offers the right thing for everyone.
What are the first steps if you want to start paddling this summer?
There are many ways to get started. I generally recommend a training session at the local kayak club. These usually take place in the summer in an outdoor pool or lake. This way you learn all the basics from a professional, which is the best preparation you can get. Most kayak clubs also offer boats and equipment for hire so you can try it out for a while.
Where is the best place to begin paddling?
The basic techniques are best practised in still water. Quarry lakes and swimming pools are especially suitable for this. Most kayak clubs have corresponding programs.
How long does it take to be really good at it?
The basic stroke techniques and various turning strokes, and eventually the kayak roll, can be learnt in just a few training sessions. Improving and honing these techniques will depend on how often you train after the course. Everyone reaches their peak performance at their own pace. And constantly assessing your own abilities is the most important skill for staying safe in strong white water currents.
What equipment do you need?
As a rule, you don't need your own equipment to start kayaking. Most kayak clubs have a wide range of equipment for hire: helmets, life jackets, wetsuits, paddle jackets, kayaks and safety equipment such as throw bags. But after the trial period it makes sense to gradually buy some gear of your own. That way, you can always be sure your equipment is well-maintained – for safety first.
What are your personal tips and tricks for getting started?
It's best to just get out there! Kayaking is very versatile and has something for everyone. After a bit of trial and error, everyone finds their niche.
What makes this watersport so special for you?
I’m always on the lookout for new adventures with my kayak. Experiencing different cultures in combination with kayaking is really special. In my kayak I can reach places where no-one has been before. For me, an important part of competitive sport is experiencing adventures and mastering the challenges. Each day has something new in store :) And sharing these moments with friends makes every paddling day an unforgettable one. ☺
